Biographies of Officers



Jennifer Garner - President 2006-2007, Swarthmore Counselor

Jennifer has worked as an engineer for Merck & Co., Inc. for the past eight years. Upon graduation from Stevens Institute of Technology with a B.E. in Chemical Engineering, she started her career in the Capital Project Management department in New Jersey. While in New Jersey, she served as SWE Membership Chair and as the Counselor for Stevens. In 2002, she moved to Pennsylvania and became a Senior Manufactuing Engineer for the Bulk Vaccine production area. Presently, she has transitioned to the Vaccine Technology and Engineering department and will be working with many operating areas and outside suppliers of raw materials. In the Philadelphia section, she served one year as Section Representative and continues to be the Swarthmore counselor. In 2005-2006, Jennifer served as the co-Chair for the Region E Conference held with Drexel University in March 2006. Jennifer enjoys fencing, walking, numerous outdoor activities, and watching college football. She is also a member of the International Society of Pharmaceutical Engineers.



Tessa Winkler - Vice President

Tessa Winkler joined SWE in 2000 as a college freshman at Penn State University. She was an active member all four years serving as Vice-President and corporate contact in 2003 and being named Outstanding Committee Chair in both 2002 and 2004. At Penn State, she created and organized a charity event, known as the Mr. Engineer Competition, that raises money annually for children with cancer through Penn State's Panhellenic Dance Marathon. Tessa joined the Philadelphia professional section in the fall of 2005 and served as the Student Section Liaison. She is a civil and environmental consulting engineer at CABE Associates, Inc. in Dover, Delaware. Tessa graduated from Penn State University in 2004 with a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering and a minor in Environmental Engineering. Currently, she is pursuing her master's degree in Environmental Engineering at the University of Delaware.

Aina Zahari - Section Representive, Temple University Counselor

Aina Zahari received her B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2002. Aina\’s first engineering work experience was during her internship with Fairchild Semiconductor as a Unit Process Development Co-op. Immediately after graduation, Aina joined Rohm and Haas Company. Presently a Capital Deployment Process Engineer based at the Engineering Division in Croydon, PA, she supports capital projects by various businesses in Rohm and Haas. Aina is currently completing her MBA from Temple University on a part time basis. Previously the co-editor for the SWE Outlook newsletter, she now serves as Section Representative and as the SWE section counselor for Temple University.

Michelle Lore - Corporate Liaison

Michelle Lore, a prior student member, has been a professional member since 2003. She graduated from Rutgers Engineering school in 1990, and continued on with her MBA also from Rutgers. Michelle currently works at Arkema, Inc. (formerly ATOFINA chemicals) as a Product Manager for the Thio chemicals division, managing marketing and supply chain activities for the light mercaptan, sulfonyls, and polysulfide product lines. She is currently Corporate Chair for the Philadelphia SWE section.



Susan Best - Engineers' Week Liaison

Susan L. Best, PE, has been an active member of SWE since 1975. In 1996, she became a Fellow of the Society and is also a Life Member. She has a Bachelor of Civil Engineering from the University of Delaware and a MSCE from California State University, Los Angeles. Currently the Director, Traffic Engineering and ITS for Urban Engineers, Inc., she has a broad background in traffic engineering and transportation planning projects. She has been the SWE-Phila Section liaison to the Delaware Valley Engineers Week Council since 1985 and is currently Senior Vice Chair of the council. She has has been a member and chair of several SWE national committees and is currently a member of the Society's bylaws committee. She has been elected as an International Director for the Institute of Transportation Engineers Board of Direction for a three year term beginning in January 2007.

Susan A. Sciarratta - Meeting Coordinator

Susan A. Sciarratta, P.E. is currently taking a break from her career as an environmental engineer and works for herself through her company, Young Engin'uity, offering workshops on science and engineering to kids of all ages. Susan has degrees in chemical and environmental engineering and currently resides in Newtown, PA with her husband and two children. Susan is a past President of SWE Philadelphia Section.



Jennifer Wetzel - Membership

Jennifer is a Project Manager at the University of Pennsylvania managing capital projects, including new construction, building renovations, and utility work. Jennifer graduated from Lehigh University in 1993 with a BS in Materials Science and Engineering and also has an MBA from Temple University. She has been a SWE member since 1990 and is also on the Steering Committee of the Philadelphia Regional Future City Competition.

Maryann Jessen - Professional Development

Maryann Santitoro Jessen joined SWE in 2006 as a corporate member. She has worked in the Technology Operations Planning Department for The Vanguard Group since 1998. Prior to joining Vanguard she has held various technical and business positions at Conrail, Dunn and Bradstreet, CIGNA, and The Wall Street Journal. Maryann holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Rider University and both Master of Science and Master of Philosophy degrees from the University of Pennsylvania.



Lisa Colosimo - Publicity

Lisa's background is in Software Engineering. She's currently a Sr. Business Analyst at Ecount, Inc. in Conshohocken, where she is responsible for all aspects of new product development. She's also worked for Siemens Medical, First Consulting Group, Mars Electronics, and Lockheed Martin working her way up from programmer. She's also been in management. She has her undergraduate degree from Carnegie Mellon University and her Master's degree from the University of Pennsylvania. Lisa is also the Team Leader for the SWE team walking in the Making Strides For Breast Cancer charity walk held each October.

Candice Hebden - Collegiate Liaison

Candice first joined SWE at Princeton University where she was the treasurer of the University’s chapter. She was part of a group of girls who popularized the virtually non-existent group. She also helped coordinate a high school colloquium for New Jersey high school girls excelling in science. She received her BSE in computer science (2004) and spent a year in Boston at a software startup (Endeca Technologies) before she returned to Philadelphia in 2005 to work as a Programmer Analyst for Mothers Work Inc. where she remains today. Candice is also a co-founder of Firefly Medical Corporation.



Diana Fernie - Website Coordinator, Drexel Counselor

Diana joined SWE in 2000 at Drexel University where received her BS in Electrical Engineering with a concentration in Power and minor in Mathematics in 2004. While at Drexel, Diana started the Drexel section website and was president for 2 years. Diana currently works for Schiller and Hersh Associates, a MEP consulting firm, designing electrical distribution systems for the airport and water department. She is a self taught webmaster and has a deep love for cats.



Alexis Wallen - University of Pennsylvania Counselor

Alexis graduated in 2003 with a BS in Chemical Engineering from Stanford University, where she was actively involved in the leadership of the student section. She has been working at Merck & Co, Inc. for three years, most recently as an engineer in vaccine process development. She is also currently pursuing a Master's degree in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering on a part-time basis through the Merck Educational Assistance program.
